Here is MalaysiaKini’s report on the economic briefing by Jomo KS to Selangor State Government which I blogged about earlier.

‘Vision 2020 likely to be put back by 10 years’

Dec 18, 09 1:08pm

Malaysia’s vision of becoming a developed nation by the year 2020 will be delayed by 10 years, said the country’s best known economist, Dr KS Jomo.

According to Jomo, who is a senior United Nations official, the average GDP (gross domestic product) growth of 9 percent before the 1997/1998 financial crisis have been slashed to only around 5 percent.

He said private investments in Malaysian has significantly reduced and public spending is now becoming more prominent as the engine of growth.

Jomo, who was a professor of economics in Universiti Malaya before joining the UN in 2005, met with senior Selangor government leaders yesterday to give a private briefing on the global economic crisis and its impact on Malaysia’s most industralised state. Continue Reading »

Thursday last week, I went the whole afternoon to look for new land to relocate the cemetery that is currently right beside Saujana Puchong residences. This work is a follow-up of when I supported the residents of Saujana Puchong to protest against the cemetery being created right besides their homes, and on Ayer Hitam forest reserve land at that, back in March 2008, and the new Pakatan state government’s decision to relocate the cemetery to a more suitable site earlier this year.

Once the cemetery is relocated, the residents will no longer have to live with the discomfort of a cemetery and burial activities next to their homes.

And most of all, Ayer Hitam can be restored back into being the nature reserve that it was meant to be before the former state government suddenly converted into cemetery land. I have already started work on planning the creation of a Taman Rekreasi Rimba Ayer Hitam together with planners, Jabatan Perancangan, MPSJ and Universiti Putra Malaysia.

Back to my recce. The man in the middle is Jaafar Mohd Atan, the director of Jabatan Perancangan Bandar dan Desa. Behind us, just behind the overgrowth is the existing cemetery. And less than 30 feet from where we are standing is the housing area. We are studying the site map for our next location.

As the EXCO in charge of investment, industry and trade in Selangor, I have to continously update myself on the state of Malaysia and the world’s economy. So yesterday, I attended Jomo KS‘s economic briefing to Selangor State Government held at SUK (Setiausaha Kerajaan) in Shah Alam.

Jomo, an economist and former professor of Universiti Malaya, is currently based in New York as the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Economic Development in the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA).

Others present include MB Khalid Ibrahim, EXCO Dr Halimah, EXCO Ronnie Liu, and EXCO Hassan Ali.

Yesterday morning, I held a press conference at Parliament to defend the rights of Ma YanHong, a tourist from China, who was arrested by the police, put in police lock-up and treated with a lack of human dignity. All this despite her having the genuine legal visa and passport to be in Malaysia!

Here is MalaysiaKini’s video of our press conference.

This is Ma’s official statement to the press:
