Navy cadet Zulfarhan Osman Zulkamain died on June 1 after being a victim of physical assault. He had succumbed to injuries and his body was found 80% covered in bruises and burn marks.

His death shocked the nation and Malaysians were angry at such tragedy.

Many Malaysians simply could not believe that such tragedy and violence could take place in a university .

In April this year when 11-year-old school boy Mohamad Thaqif Amin Mohd Gaddafi who was an abuse victim had succumbed to his injuries, a question was raised as to how his beating by an assistant warden had gone unnoticed by others.

Malaysians are now asking how physical assault on Zulfarhan could take place and go unnoticed.

Two days ago, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein revealed that in addition to the board of inquiry established earlier, as well as the ongoing police investigation, the Armed Forces has set up a special investigation board to conduct a thorough investigation on the university’s cadets and staff members.

He said with the establishment of the unit, he hoped to be able to interview the cadet’s friends himself, as well as review things that needed to be improved in the recruit training and management system at the Military Training Academy (ALK) and the National Defence University of Malaysia (UPNM) without any bureaucracy.

Hishammuddin said the unit would also ensure no one was spared in the search for truth, including lecturers who knew about the case.

All of them would also be removed from service if found guilty of concealing the violence against the victim from their superiors.

On June 5, Malaysian Digest has reported that an anonymous source revealed to Malaysian Gazette that bullying and ragging incidences are a norm amongst the students of UPNM.

Part of the newsreport is a s follows:-
The former UPNM lecturer (the source) unveiled the shocking reality that the ragging culture amongst military people has been inherited from the British era – that’s still being practiced to this day – on the grounds to teach every soldier to be subservient and obedient to their leaders.

The source added that the vile ‘tradition’ has resulted to the demise of Zulfarhan, but what’s more shocking is that he has heard complaints and cases involving sodomy, oral sex and beating during his tenure at the university.

“The student’s complaints on oral sex, sodomy and many more is considered a norm,” the former lecturer shared, and revealed that most complaints are hidden from the public as students are trained to obey the commands, and to not relay such incidences back to their respective parents.

“One of my students, a smart boy who achieved a near 3.8 CGPA, was brutally beaten in 2014.

“The beating caused a nerve malfunction in his brain, and he is now regarded as a Person With Disabilities (PWDs) as he’s not able to learn due to his damaged brain nerves.”

What the former lecturer revealed must be fully investigated. I therefore call on Datuk Hishammuddin to carry out a full probe on the allegations that bullying, oral sex and sodomy is a norm at Malaysian National Defense University.
