I would find the government's response in this regard as very childish in the sense that given the exposure our youth nowadays, they are in a way more mature nowadays. Therefore the age of voting should be lowered to reflect our status as being a modern nation, ready to take its place among the nations of the world. However, the government's reluctance to lower the age could be due to the fact that the recent elections have shown that the youth are mature enough to make informed decisions about who should govern this country. This is would therefore impact the stranglehold that UMNO has on the people of Malaysia in that in the past it was relatively easy to cow the populace into voting submission because the youth were politically apathetic. The scenario now is different. The young has awakened.

once again the government talk down its own citizens. DEB work on the assumption that after more than 30 years Malays are still incompetent compared to their fellow Malaysians. This is not helping Malays to help themselves.

If "... berpendapat umur matang bagi seseorang warganegara Malaysia adalah 21 tahun. Sebelum umur tersebut, sebahagian besar rakyat Malaysia adalah masih lagi dalam peringkat persekolahan." - why not make Malaysia revamp its system and let our kids grow up faster?

In this internet and globalisation era, we cannot take our own sweet time. This will also relieve the burden of the parents, offer greater supply of manpower to the work force and trim down the resources required by the administration to run the education system, free up more money for infrastructure and health care. Mentally, younger Malaysians are forced to act more independently at a younger age. This give them time to experience failure and pick themselves up.

I am saying we should cut down the number of years in school without sacrificing the quality of the syllabus. During my time, a university graduate leaves tertiary education at 24-25. Now some people graduate at 22 years old. This is already an improvement.

Further more, why can't people at 18 years old vote? Why can't we give them an option to vote or note. If they are "belum matang" they could choose not to register themselves. Heck, a lot of 40 years old also do not opt to register. It is about giving people a choice.

Could it be that the government is not confident of the potential support of young voters?
