Press Statement By YB Teresa Kok, MP For Seputeh and Publicity Secretary Of DAP At Kuala Lumpur On 9th December 2006

Michael Chong Should Voluntarily Hand Over To The Police Information About Ahlong Who Have Used Violence and Threats Against Borrowers

I urge Michael Chong, the complaint bureau chief of MCA, to pass the list of Ahlong who have used threats and violence against borrowers to the police, to assist police and the government in clamping down on illegal money lending activities.

According to the news reports today, the CID Director, Christopher Wan, said the police have received the list of legal money lending companies from the MCA and will investigate whether these companies are involved in illegal activities.

Since Michael Chong has admitted that he helped the victims by negotiating with Ahlong to lower the loan interests, this shows he has the details of those Ahlong who have used threats and violence on borrowers.

I believe Michael Chong is the best person to help the police arrest the blood-suckers. If anything, he may have indirectly given free publicity on Ahlong services over the years by repeatedly holding press conferences on this issue. Michael Chong himseld admitted more and more people are borrowing and more and more borrowers are going to see Michael Chong.

If the borrowers are able to negotiate with Ahlong to pay back the loan and interests, then these people won’t come to seek help from the service centres of political parties. Most of these complainants who came to our service centres are the victims who have been threatened and harassed by Ahlong.

As such, Michael Chong should hand over to the police his little black book of names and info of Ahlong operating throughout the country.

The case of Seah Wong Chong and his wife Kau Mei Lin who killed their three children and attempted suicide later should be a wake-up call for police, political parties and the public.

Society must push the police and the government to enforce the Money Lenders Act in order to clamp down on illegal money lending activities.

Good one Teresa, Mike Chong does have all the necessary information on those Sharks, but he dares not, or will not, if ever he passes all information to the police and should the police be capable of these sharks, our “TABLOID Guy” Mike might be put out of limelight, he exists because we think he can solve, can help.

If he is genuine, he should consider your proposal like handling his little black book to the police.

But judging from the thriving Ah Long businesses, it must be high. “it is better to solve the right problem the wrong way than the wrong problem the right way” Doug McIlroy [...]
